Questions that we get are where do specific items go and when do you see a balance sheet form. It's so long and divided into sections. Customers are concerned about what to put in each section, and if they put it in the wrong section, is that incorrect? Are they filling it out completely? When filling out a balance sheet, you should list all of your assets on the right side and your liabilities on the left side. Don't get too caught up in the details, I'll go over some of them with you, but the most important thing is to list all of the assets on the right side and all of the debts or liabilities on the left side. Start at the top and work your way down, that's what I suggest you do. Checking and savings would include money markets, farm accounts, and checking and savings accounts. If you have multiple accounts, you can always add a sheet of paper and list those accounts out, then put the total on the balance sheet. Accounts receivable would include customers who have purchased something but haven't paid for it yet. Marketable securities are easily liquidated accounts, such as a certificate of deposit (CD). If it's a CD with a five-year timeframe, it should be placed in a different section. Livestock and commodities for sale would include items like calves, hay, grain, and crops. It may seem odd to split up a cow-calf pair, but we do it because you intend to keep the cow. Items like hay, feed, and cattle should be listed with their current value, not their future value. Investments in growing crops should include a schedule listing the acreage, costs, and money invested. Supplies on hand would include items like propane, pre-bought fertilizer, and feed. Everything...
